Macy’s Desks
Often, when we think of office furniture - including home office desks, we immediately look at office supply stores. Why not? It is logical after all. We don’t even think about department stores like Macy’s.
You see, most department stores in malls have extremely limited floor space. So they may showcase a little bit of everything - including, and especially furniture. When I think about the furniture department at our local Macy’s I think of bedroom sets, dining sets, and sofas - lots of sofas. This is probably because furniture for major rooms has a higher demand than home office desks.
But we are talking bricks and mortar Macy’s. I recently visited their virtual store and found an excellent selection of Macy’s desks. I have to say that I was surprised at the variety in the selection. I really wasn’t expecting to find much at all.
There are about 7 styles of Macy’s desks to choose from. They are all elegantly designed and will easily blend with either casual or formal decor. Some of the desks are more traditional writing desks while others offer space for a computer and have roll out file drawers (an actual separate unit from the desk) for storage as well. I really like the roll out drawers as an option because this tends to reduce the overall weight of the desk. This is a convenient feature if you tend to rearrange furniture often.
My favorite choice of all the Macy’s desks was an oval number that is on sale right now. There is not much storage in it - just one drawer. But the sleek and simplistic style not to mention the unusualness of it definitely make it a conversation piece. If you just need a clean writing space, perhaps in a prominent formal living room this desk would be perfect.
The bottom line is don’t overlook department stores when searching for home office desks. You may want to check out the Macy’s desks as well, you may be pleasantly surprised too.

Home Office Desks: A Design Challenge
Home office desks are difficult to find. Often, space in the home is limited and the home office usually occupies a remote corner of an unused room. If you are anything like me, you spend the most amount of time in your home office. This area usually houses a computer and printer at the minimum. If you add a paper shredder, phone, file cabinet, modem, office supplies, chargers, external drives and a myriad of other productivity items - then you will quickly run out of space.
This is why home office desks pose such a challenge. First, they need to be small enough to fit in the home. Furniture that was made for large offices can overpower a house - in fact, those type of desks may not even fit through the front door. But an oversized desk will definitely allow the most working space.
The second challenge is finding home office desks that blend well with a home’s decor. Desks that were made for offices usually have an industrial type of feel. On the other hand, desks that are decorative are usually impractical. They may look nice but they fill up fast and don’t have spacious drawers and sufficient surface to hold all the electronic stuff that a home office needs.
Even desks for children’s rooms suffer from the same issues.
My approach to the space problem surrounding home office desks has been a bit of a patchwork solution. Using a system of tables, shelves, portable drawers and file cabinets, my home office space is constantly evolving. Design continues to be an issue as I try to find things for my home office desk space that fits well with my homes decor but is still very useful.
As I find practical items for home office desks I will share them with you and also share my ideas on how to create a useful, efficient and productive workspace. The goal of course, is to create a space that is so efficient that you will finish all that paperwork and computer work so quickly that you won’t need to spend a lot of time in your home office but rather you will be looking for things to do to keep you in a home office space that you love.
